New Programs at MCF (Spring 2013)

Social Skills Group

A program specifically designed to meet the unique needs of our local teens and young adults with autism.

Weekly community outings to local landmarks, hikes in the local area, restaurants, movies, community centers and more are held as a means to
practice and generate newly acquired skills.

Our objective is to provide the participant with the following:
- An enjoyable and educational social setting where friendships can be developed and practiced.
- Increased awareness and knowledge of social skills limitations.
- Improved ability to initiate, interpret and respond to the verbal and non-verbal social cues used in various settings in the community to avoid unexpected behaviors.
- Improved knowledge about personal hygiene and self-care.

Twenty-one years ago, Paul began his career in special education as a one-to-one aide for a student with autism in Virginia.  Later he became the vocational coordinator for students with developmental disabilities at this first school.  He has been a special education teacher for students with autism, emotional disturbance, and juvenile offenders in both public and private programs.  Paul worked for a large behavioral health hospital running six special education schools for students with autism throughout the State of Maryland.  Currently he works with families and school systems to improve the services for students with special needs.  He continues to present at many conferences both nationally and internationally on educating students with disabilities whom exhibit significant behavioral difficulties.  Paul also teaches and supervises undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Maryland in the severe disabilities program.  In his latest endeavor, Paul is consulting with Mountain Creek Farms to enhance programming for adults with disabilities in the Shenandoah Valley where individuals are supported in living and working independently.
